As Japan’s first permanent capital, Nara offers a fascinating insight into the nation’s early history and cultural traditions. Travelling by train from Kyoto, a full-day walking tour can include strolling through Nara Park, meeting the world-famous deer, visiting the magnificent Todaiji Temple, home to the Great Buddha, and exploring the grounds of Kasuga Taisha, one of Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrines. Depending on your interests, we can also include a visit to beautiful Isuien Garden, the World Heritage-listed Kofukuji Temple, or the former residence of celebrated novelist Shiga Naoya.
Closer to Kyoto and famous for producing some of Japan’s finest green tea, Uji is a charming riverside town steeped in history. Private tour options can include a visit to the stunning Byodo-in Temple and its striking vermilion Phoenix Hall, sampling matcha at the world’s oldest tea house, enjoying a boat ride along the picturesque Uji River, exploring the town’s backstreets lined with artisan shops, or learning about the fascinating traditions of tea production at Chazuna Museum.
Nestled in the mountains north of Kyoto, Ohara is a peaceful rural village renowned for its scenic beauty, traditional farmhouses and vibrant autumn colours. A full-day private tour can include visiting the tranquil Sanzen-in Temple and historic Jakko-in Temple, strolling through quiet country lanes and traditional farmers’ markets, enjoying lunch featuring the area’s fresh local produce, or simply soaking up the relaxed countryside atmosphere far removed from the pace of the city. Add value to your Kyoto experience with this tour - We did a guided walk of the Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto with Keith, who has lived in Kyoto for many years. We are independent travellers who research our destinations thoroughly... read more and love to learn about the culture of the places we visit. Keith really added a lot of value to our experience of the Philosopher’s Path. It was perfectly paced and great to have Keith’s additional local knowledge adding to the experience. I’ll definitely always remember our walk whenever I use my tea cups I bought at the little honesty box local artisan ceramics stand along the way. I liked being able to organise the tour in advance and pay on the day. Great coordination and allocation of the guide by the company. Will definitely use again. Highly recommended if you want to understand more about what you are seeing along the way.
